Through May, we are honored to share a new exhibit at the Columbia State Historic Park Museum that brings history to life through art. Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition tells the story of the earliest documented Cinco de Mayo celebration in the United States—through historic records and beautifully crafted artwork. Featuring original pieces by artists Tim McCaffrey and Gwen Diamond, with historical content curated by Mercedes Tune, the exhibit illuminates the long-standing presence, resilience, and contributions of the Latino community in Tuolumne County.
These works invite visitors to see beyond the familiar holiday and into the lived experiences of Mexican and Latino pioneers who shaped this region. Through art and archival storytelling, the exhibit celebrates a legacy of courage, cultural pride, and community solidarity that continues to inspire today.
